Coon Rapids Dam Coon Rapids MN
The Coon Rapids Dam was built in 1913 by Northern States Power to generate electricity for the area. In 1966 NSP stopped using Coon Rapids Dam for power generation and it became a recreational park. Walkers and bicyclists can enjoy a trip across Coon Rapids Dam for a great view of the river. The picture to the right of Coon Rapids Dam was taken from the air and gives a great view of the Dam and park area. The Coon Rapids Dam is operated by the Three Rivers Park District. The gates of the dam are opened in May to create a pool above the dam for boating on the Mississippi River. The gates of the Coon Rapids Dam are then lowered in October. Coon Rapids Dam divides Anoka and Hennepin counties with one on each bank of the river. |
